First Transgender Homecoming Queen Crowned At California High School [VIDEO} Few Months After Admitting Who She Really Is

First transgender homecoming queen was crowned at Orange County Marina High School in California Friday night in what is known as a conservative county, making history in the U.S.

The first transgender homecoming queen is Cassidy Lynn Campbell. The 16-year-old formally known as Lance said she knew she was a girl from a young age. She'd gravitated toward Barbie dolls, lipstick and dresses and was excluded by male classmates for years because of it, according to the Orange County Report.

After being encouraged to be herself by staff and administration after she said she was gay, she showed up to her senior year of high school as who she really is. The student body gave mostly positive reviews and a few months later, Campbell becomes the first transgender homecoming queen.

"Knowing that it was only my school and my student body, that's what makes it even more special because they voted for me and they all wanted me and the majority wanted me to win," Campbell told CBS Los Angeles. "Whether I won or not tonight, I already was a winner from the beginning and I knew it. I put my message out there. If this helps one child or more, or hundreds or thousands or millions then it was more than worth it."

Campbell became the 50th homecoming queen in the school's history.

"I'm speechless. I can't even believe this," Cassidy said. "I'm so proud of my school, my administration and the student body for making this happen."

The crowning of Cassidy comes shortly after a new law was passed in California allowing transgender students to choose which school restrooms they use and whether to play boys or girls sports.
