Emmys 2013: Jack Klugman's Son Asks Why Cory Monteith?

Emmys 2013: The Emmys are adding special tributes to their "In Memoriam" segment. The Emmys 2013 producers probably made the decision because of the sudden and unexpected death of James Gandolfini, who played a huge part in the transformation of the art of television with his portrayal of Tony Soprano on The Sopranos.

The other special Emmy honorees are the comic actors Jonathan Winters and Jean Stapleton, whose Edith Bunker character on “All in The Family” is an icon of classic TV, and the producer Gary David Goldberg. All of these television professional played a part in transforming TV, but Cory Monteith? "Glee" fans may appreciate the special tribute to the late star Cory Monteith at the Emmys on Sunday, but at the expense of who? Why not the other Tony, Tony Nelson? Larry Hagman also had two iconic TV roles, on “I Dream of Jeannie” and as J.R. Ewing on “Dallas.” Why not Jack Klugman?

Jack Klugman starred in two 1970s TV hits, "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy, M.E." He played in four classic episodes of the influential “The Twilight Zone.” He won three Emmys. Jack Klugman died in December.

Jack Klugman's son Adam is wondering why Emmy organizers are staging a special honor to Keith Monteith, the Canadian actor who died of heroin and alcohol poisoning in July. Keith Monteith was 31 years old. Why did the Emmys snub his father, relegating the iconic actor to the usual "In Memoriam" reel while Keith Monteith gets special notice.

In an interview, Adam Klugman said in an interview: "They're celebrating this self-inflicted tragedy instead of celebrating the life of my father, who won three Emmys.... Cory Monteith never won an Emmy." Adam Klugman said he has nothing against Monteith. Klugman watches "Glee" and counts himself a fan. But, Klugman said, "to compare the contribution he made to the contribution my father made -- it doesn't compare."

The Emmy producers said in a statement, "Every generation of television viewers has its favorites, and when we decided to expand the 'In Memoriam' segment to remember certain individuals, we wanted these pieces to be representative as well. To a younger generation, Cory Monteith's portrayal of Finn Hudson was highly admired, and the producers felt that he should be included along with the four other individuals we have singled out."

Klugman says "Let's call this what it is. They're doing this because they think they're gonna get a younger generation of viewers to watch."

The younger generation isn’t going to watch the Emmys.

They’ll be watching “Breaking Bad.”
