Katy Perry’s New Song Has Bengals Fans `Roar’-ing With Laughter; New Team Anthem Is `The Running Gag of The Night’

Katy Perry’s new single, “Roar,” is a little too soft for football fans. Cincinnati Bengals’ fans “Roared” with laughter as the new Katy Perry song was foisted on them as the new team anthem.
It appears that Cincinnati Bengals’ fans don't think Katy Perry’s “Roar” is tough enough for the team.

In theory, Katy Perry's latest hit single is a good match for the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s called “Roar.” Katy Perry sings “I am a Champion.” What else do the Cincinnati Bengals need from a theme song?

They played the new Katy Parry song a lot at the Bengals' home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Paul Brown Stadium on Monday night.

They played the new Katy Perry song too often.

It became a running joke.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Bengals fans took to Twitter to stifle Katy Perry’s “Roar.”

Bengals fans were shocked to hear Katy Perry’s pop tune “Roar” on the loudspeakers as the players took the field. Pop music? Where were the screaming guitars and pounding drums?

Jason Patrick, a Bengals fan called Katy Perry’s Roar "the running joke of the night." He said "You expect to hear certain things at a football game: 'Crazy Train' and basically 'Jock Jams Volume One,' So we hear this and we're saying, 'Uh, is this our new theme song?'"

Another Bengals fan, Mitchell Morgan, concurred, "How can you think you can do something like that without any backlash? There were Steelers fans next to me laughing."

Katy Perry’s “Roar” was No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 at the time of the game.

The Cincinnati Bengals director of sales and public affairs, Jeff Berding, said he was surprised. He said "the lyrics are sort of on the mark and we thought it was a good song. The social media was obviously very negative."

Katy Perry’s “Roar” has been pulled from its prominent place. It will be played while people are showing up and leaving, but not when the players take the field. And certainly not as often as they played it last Monday.

Berding said "I think some fans proved that there's an expectation that when the team takes the field, there should be more of a hard-rock, classic-rock song and I know that's what we're going to do this game. Katy Perry is not going to be the last song you hear before the team takes the field."
