Today, the Korean tech giant announced a new variant for the recently released Galaxy Note 3, called the Samsung Galaxy Round.

Unveiled as the world's first smartphone sporting a curved display, Samsung Galaxy Round makes the Asian tech company "a step closer to achieving wearable devices with flexible - even unbreakable - screens," as NDTV Gadgets reported.

The Samsung Galaxy Round is equipped with a 5.7 inch display that has a slight horizontal curve. It also weighs less than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, thus, providing a more comfortable grip than other smartphones in the market with flat screens, as reported by Sydney Morning Herald, citing SK Telecom, a mobile carrier.

Curved displays, the one found on Samsung Galaxy Round, are "on the frontlines of Samsung's innovation war with rivals such as Apple Inc and LG Electronics Inc, as the South Korean firm seeks to expand its lead in the slowing market for high-end smartphones"

As told by Nam Dae-jong, an analyst from Hana Daetoo Securities, the Samsung Galaxy Round is the phone manufacturer's attempt to measure consumer's demand for curved phones. He told, "I don't think it'll be massively compelling enough for gadget buyers as the curved display doesn't come with many unique features."

Moreover, Dae-jong shared, "It's a step forward for having unbreakable gadgets and flexible devices eventually. But for now, the new phone is more of a symbolic product." He also added that the company did not yet have capacity for large-scale production of curved touch-screens for the new Galaxy Round.

Some of the key features of the Samsung Galaxy Round is the tilt function, allowing users to check information like battery life and missed calls, even if the home screen is off.

Samsung also said in a statement that users of Samsung Galaxy Round "can scroll through media files by pressing the screens' right or left."

Samsung Galaxy Round will be released in South Korea yet. No decision has been made yet regarding its release in other markets.
