Universal Studios Roller Coaster Stuck 140-Feet High Nearly Three Hours: One Hospitalized, Everyone Else Comes Down Safe Despite Being In 90-Degree Position With Backs Facing Ground

Universal Studios roller coaster stuck Wednesday night when riders on the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit stopped 140 feet above ground and didn't start up, which left the riders stranded for 2 1/2 hours 17 stories high.

One rider was hospitalized for back and neck pains from sitting in a locked position while the Universal Studios roller coaster was stuck for a few hours in Orlando, Fla. Park spokesman Tom Schroder called the incident a technical glitch.

Schroder told CNN that the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit didn't restart like it is supposed to when it reaches its highest point. This is when the Universal Studios roller coaster got stuck, leaving the riders stranded and helpless.

While the cars toward the front were at least closer to level, with a view over the hill, those farther behind were "sitting straight back with no way to move, because it's straight down," one park visitor, Ray Downs, told CNN affiliate WESH. It was literally a 90-degree drop forward and backward for those who were stuck.

"We're happy that our guests are safely off Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. We'll find out what happened and will open the ride as soon as we can," Universal tweeted.

It took a while as the Orlando Fire Department had to help fix the situation. Most of the riders were taken off while 10 still remained for the full duration of the 2 1/2 hours.

Schroder said it wasn't the first time an incident like this has happened at the theme-park.

"We are going to work to understand what happened tonight (Wednesday) before we reopen the ride again," Schroder said.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit reopened Thursday.

"I'm not going to detail it, but it has been resolved," Schroder said about the issue. "The safety of our guests and the experience they have on our attractions is very important to us. For us, there is no such thing as a routine glitch. We put every resource we have against resolving them."
