Nobel Prize Winner Peter Higgs "Did Not Know" He'd Won Until Woman On Street Congratulated Him

Nobel Prize winner Prof Peter Higgs did not know he had won the prize until he was congradulated by a woman on the street.

Higgs, who doesn't have a cell phone, said a neighbor pulled up in her car as he was coming back from lunch in Edinburgh.

He said, "She congratulated me on the news and I said 'oh, what news?'"

The woman had been told by her daughter in London that Higgs won the prize.

He added: "I heard more about it obviously when I got home and started reading the messages."

Higgs, 84, is an emeritus professor at the University of Edinburgh. He won the Nobel Prize for his work on the theory of the particle which shares his name, the Higgs boson.

Higgs won this year's physics prize with Francois Englert of Belgium...but he heard the news a bit late.

Which, if you ask us, is sort of charming, in a nutty-professor way. Here's to not having a cell phone.
