The Walking Dead Season 4 Spoilers: The Walking Dead Review Roundup: What Do the Critics Say? (Video)

The Walking Dead Season 4 Spoilers: The Walking Dead Review Roundup: Rick might be losing his edge, growing vegetable, raising and naming pigs, letting his ass get big, but The Walking Dead still plays like a tightly wound guitar string about to snap.

But that's not enough for some reviewers, who say The Walking Dead season 4 is off to a slow start.

'The Walking Dead' stars Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, and Melissa Ponzio.

Last night's season premiere of The Walking Dead, "30 Days Without an Accident," begins a few months after Rick's crew took in the weak, old and feeble from The Governor's community of Woodbury. Now there is a whole neighborhood living in The Walking Dead prison.

Reviewers found almost no fault in the season opener of "The Walking Dead."

TV Fanatic said "Simply by itself, the title of The Walking Dead Season 4 premiere, "30 Days Without an Accident," gave off the ominous but predictable implication that somebody was going to end up walker food." Sean McKenna wrote "Yes, there was some nerve wracking tension, but that came from the characters walking around in the quiet store or the walkers slowly pushing the ceiling in with their weight. The anticipation was there, but as soon as it started raining walkers, my only fears were for the brand new characters. You don't have them go along with the main cast on a run to survive. Someone has to get it. ... this series is always filled with exciting potential. A fair start to what could be an exciting season (watch out for shower walkers!), it's good to see The Walking Dead Season 4 in action."

TV.Com says The Walking Dead is Back from the Dead. Tim Surette wrote: "I'm going to be totally honest here, guys. Going in, I wasn't too jazzed by the thought of The Walking Dead's fourth season. The Season 3 finale was bleh, a critical blow for a series that was had grown too inconsistent. As it progressed, The Walking Dead spent more and more time trying to win a ton of Emmys and get on critics' "best of the year" lists with heavy acting and demonstrative chatter, but it never fulfilled that goal. It wanted to be the best drama on television, but come on, moaning about the same crap over and over again while dramatically sitting on its thumbs did not elevated it to the same level as other dramas on the same channel. The Walking Dead, despite glimpses of greatness, needed a lot of work.  ... We talk a lot about new management making its mark on the series a lot with The Walking Dead, but this time we really mean it. Gimple's debut as showrunner was a good one, and he addressed some of the series' biggest problems while polishing up what made it good, finding a balance between competent drama and sprucing up requisite zombie attacks. I'm just sorry Patrick couldn't be around to see it continue. R.I.P., you dork. "

Screen Rant thinks a little fresh blood is always a good thing on The Walking Dead. Kevin Yeoman writes: "as we see in the early parts of the season 4 premiere, '30 Days Without an Accident,' fresh blood isn't only welcome and promising from a behind-the-scenes perspective; it can give the onscreen story a sense of vibrancy as well. There are so many new faces being introduced and the setting of the prison just carries with it such a different vibe that watching Rick (Andrew Lincoln) quietly tend a garden while listening to an old country song is the least conspicuous tonal shift the premiere brings to the table. But along with slowly demonstrating Rick's aversion to violence, Gimple and his crew also go to great lengths to make all the new faces and shifting circumstances feel pleasantly familiar. This is not a radical re-imagining of something that had stumbled at times creatively; it's simply a necessary progression."

Screen Crush says "All in all "30 Days Without An Accident" makes for an effective premiere with plenty of strong action and character beats to prime us for the season to come, though lacking a bit in any real surprises or shifts that the prior finale might have promised. The intel we got from this weekend's New York Comic-Con previewed some tense moments and surprise character additions to keep things interesting over the coming weeks, even if tonight's premiere doesn't quite herald the same level of excitement."

Robert Bernstein of Den of Geeks writes: Season 4 opens with an exciting episode, and if Scott Gimple can keep up this pace, Season 4 is going to be the best season yet... After seeing the first 10 minutes of tonight's episode, I was beginning to fear my worst nightmare had come true: The Walking Dead has become more about relationships and people than people killing zombies (I mean, there were three kisses in the first 10 minutes of The Walking Dead, like Daryl said, "it's like a damn romance novel.") But, the good news is that this was not the case for the rest of the episode, and this might be The Walking Dead's best premiere yet. With Scott Gimple taking over as showrunner, it's clear the show has taken a turn for the better, as "30 Days Without An Accident" did exactly what it was supposed to do: excite the hell out of us for the rest of Season 4."

AMC announced that it is in the early stages of developing a "companion series" to expanding its lucrative Walking Dead franchise with the first Walking Dead spin-off. The Walking Dead spinoff will  launch in 2015.
