Victoria's Secret Model Cameron Russell Says Other Women Shouldn't Become Models In TED Talk: "Cashing In" On "Legacy Of Privilege" [WATCH VIDEO]

Victoria's Secret model Cameron Russell encourages other women to...not become models.

'For the past few centuries, we [in the West] have defined beauty as tall, slender figures, femininity and white skin,' said model Cameron Russell in a recent talk for the TEDx series of lectures.

'This is a legacy that was built for me, and that I have been cashing in on.'

Russel's TEDx talk received 2.3 million YouTube hits. The Victoria's Secret Angel just won the genetic lottery, though, she says.

Modelling is 'not a career path', Russell said in her TEDx talk. She criticized the industry and the effect that seeing image after image of young, thin white women has on other womens' self-esteem.

In a new interview with the Telegraph, Russell discussed why she gave the TED talk.

'I gave the talk because I wanted to tell an honest personal narrative of what privilege means,' she said.

'I work hard but my modeling career gives my views undeserved attention.'

Modeling won't make one happy, Russell said.

'If anyone were to think that looking like a model is the key to happiness, they just need to meet a group of models.

'Because they have the thinnest thighs, and the shiniest hair, and the coolest clothes, and are probably the most insecure group of women on the planet.'

Russell described herself as benefiting from a 'legacy of gender and racial oppression' during her TEDx talk.

'I have received all these benefits from a deck that is stacked in my favor, and it doesn't always make me happy,' she explains.
