Android 4.4 KitKat Release Date: New OS Expected To Be Launched Anytime; Shows Improvements In App Launcher, Notification Bar And Dialer

Android 4.4 KitKat release date: The new mobile OS by Google is set to arrive any day now. Earlier news and reports have floated October 14 and October 15 release dates, but so far there has still been no launch events whatsoever from Mountain View showcasing the latest iteration of the Android platform.

CNET says that Android 4.4 KitKat seems to only have minor enhancements, at least from what the feature leaks reveal. Changes on the OS include tweaks to the app launcher, notification bar, and dialer. The tech site said that there seems to be no crazy overhaul, but a simple color adjustment and transparency on some areas.

Some of the change includes the application drawer moving from an all-black background in favor of the transparent bar and the notification area also, at least according to leaks, will have a see through effect. 9to5Google shows the notification bar with colors that match or complement various apps. The dialer app, for instance, brings up a blue bar, while the Hangout app has a green one.

In a report collated by CNET, Italian Android blog TuttoAndroid, reveal that the lock screen will include shortcut to the camera application. The Italian-language tech site also show that the “always listening” functionality available in the Motorola Moto X will be found in the new Android 4.4. experience. This means users can expect quick access to Google Now and can begin searching without having to touch the phone.

Android Police reported that other changes could come in the area of app folders and widgets. Based on what they saw, folders are no longer limited to 16 shortcuts and will simply scroll if there are more. The widget placement moves out from the app drawer and back to the more traditional long-press method on the home screen. CNET noted that the stock Android 4.4. experience allows for more than five home screen panels.

The stock camera experience should also see a number of adjustments, as there would be options to apply filters, borders and effects. Other expected tweaks to the shooter include straightening, mirroring and color balance.

According to CNET, if the final product resembles the leaked images from of recent, then the app itself looks like it’s going to get a makeover. Tweaks could come in the form of streamlined UI with quicker access to flash settings, timers and image size.

In another leak discovered by CNET, other changes may include the option to save images locally in PDF format, export images in a variety of sizes and quality, and apply built-in filters and effects.

There could also be native printing available into the Android, which would allow for options such as paper size, number of copies, orientation and selecting between color or black and white.

From what it looks like, Google would seem to include Cloud Print at an OS level instead of relying on its standalone application. Wireless display support may also be available in the next version of Android.

A screengrab of a leaked Android 4.4 built shows a “Payment” option, though it’s uncertain what the features for it would be, it’s speculated that it would be for a Google Wallet account.
