Tattooed Librarians of the Ocean State - it's not the latest indie rock band, it's a fundraising calendar for the Rhode Island Library Association!

Other calendars of tattooed librarians have been very successful fundraisers, including the Tattooed Librarians of the Pacific Northwest.

Do tattoos and librarians seem like an unlikely combination?  The Rhode Island Library Association says that tattoos and libraries are a natural fit: "Libraries are unique as they simultaneously foster the preservation of histories and traditions, while fighting censorship and fostering cutting-edge learning environments. Likewise, tattoos can also represent the preservation of history and resistance of the norm."

Colleen LeComte, 31, who works in the Newport and Portsmouth public libraries, said: "It seems to be a lot of the young people entering the profession now have tattoos. It really shows how the profession is changing. It's not your stereotypically little old gray lady with a bun anymore."

However, the stereotype about librarians wanting quiet might still be true, judging from the cover image of Tattoed Librarians of the Ocean State.  The image features librarian Emily Grace Mehrer and her tattoo, a finger raised to lips in a "hush" position. Down the finger are inked the letters "SHH."

A Tattooed Librarians of the Ocean State Calendar seems like a great fundraising idea, as libraries have struggled for funds in recent years.  Library funds go towards more than just books - libraries have become centers for technology and community. Libraries even lend e-books, and some even let patrons borrow Kindles or other e-readers to test them out. Libraries run literacy programs and discussion groups and can be vital community and social spaces.
