Shayanna Jenkins Pleads Not Guilty in Odin Lloyd Murder Case; Aaron Hernandez Fiancée Faces Perjury Charge

Shayanna Jenkins, the fiancée of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, pleaded not guilty to a perjury charge in the Odin Lloyd murder trial. Shayanna Jenkins was charged with lying to a Massachusetts grand jury about disposing of evidence in the murder case against him.

Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player from Boston who was dating Jenkins' sister, was murdered in June. Aaron Hernandez, 23, was charged but pleaded not guilty to murder charges. The pro football player is being held without bail. Hernandez was also linked to a double homicide in Boston investigation into a 2012.

During her arraignment in Fall River Superior Court, Aaron Hernandez Fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins, was released on personal recognizance on a single count of perjury. Prosecutors had asked for a $5,000 cash bail. The perjury charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years.

According to Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Patrick Bomberg, Shayanna Jenkins lied to the grand jury during an evidence hearing. The DA said Shayanna Jenkins threw out a box that New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez asked her to "get rid of" in the aftermath of the Odin Lloyd murder.

Bombger said that initially, Shayanna Jenkins invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Bombger said Jenkins was later granted immunity for her testimony.

Defense attorney Janice Bassil said Jenkins answered every question she was asked at the grand jury hearing. She said prosecutors were overreaching with the perjury charge. There is no evidence Jenkins lied.

Aaron Hernandez shares a home with Shayanna Jenkins in North Attleborough, Mass. Bomberg alleges Jenkins drove off with a box he retrieved from the basement of their home, put it in a trash bag covered in baby clothes the day after Odin Lloyd was killed. Shayanna Jenkins told the grand jury that she threw the box in a dumpster but could not remember where. Bomberg did not specify what he thought was in in the box. According to court records, Carlos Ortiz, a friend of Aaron Hernandez who is charged as an accessory in the Odin Lloyd murder, told investigators that Hernandez put firearms in a box in his basement after the killing. According to prosecutors, the murder weapon used in the Odin Lloyd killing has not been found.

Prosecutors say that Ortiz and Ernest Wallace were in a car with Hernandez and Lloyd on the night that Lloyd was killed. Wallace pleaded not guilty. He is being held on $500,000 bail. Ortiz will be arraigned on Friday.

Hernandez's cousin, Tanya Singleton, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact and criminal contempt. Prosecutors say Hernandez’s cousin refused to testify to grand jurors. She was offered immunity.
