‘Assassin’s Creed’ Movie Features Michael Fassbender; Veteran Screenwriter Scott Frank Also On Board

Fox and  Ubisoft have hooked up Michael Fassbender for the lead role in "Assassin's Creed." They also took a veteran screenwriter.

Michael Fassbender has confirmed his participation in the video game adaptation. During the premiere of his current film "12 Years A Slave," he talks with The Daily Beast: "That's definitely happening. We're just developing the script at the moment. I'd heard of it but had never played the game. I don't have a video game player ... that's not what they're called. [Laughs] I met up with the guys from Ubisoft and they told me the story behind it, and I thought it was very interesting-the idea of reliving memories."

The implications of the statement: 'idea of reliving memories' is an indication that not only will Fassbender play present-day protagonist Desmond Miles but he'll also play Miles' ancestor, Altair from the first Assassin's Creed video game. If the movie is successful, there is a possibility that  'Magneto' may also play Ezio and Connor in sequels. That would be quite a feat considering Altair is Syrian, Ezio is Italian and Connor is half-Indian. It would definitely present a worthy challenge to Fassbender's remarkable acting talent.

Ubisoft is leaving no stone unturned. They have insisted on maintaining creative control, but they took the advice of Fox and took Scott Frank (Minority Report, Wolverine). He confirmed this on a presscon for "The Wolverine": "I'm rewriting Assassin's Creed right now, and what I love about it is that I've never adapted a video game before and it has its own set of challenges. Especially in the world of rewrites, I love trying to do something completely different if I can."

Filming is scheduled to begin sometime next year for a June 19, 2015 release.
