‘Toy Story of Terror’ Gets Rave Reviews! Will ABC Make The TV Special An Annual Halloween Treat?

Pixar will not have a movie next year, but they released a TV Special on ABC that was met with overwhelming critical raves.

It's hard to knock a Toy Story movie. The last installment, "Toy Story 3" is the most successful animated movie of all time.

"Toy Story of Terror" is the most ambitious short film ever, as it's also the longest. It also subjects them to an unfamiliar feeling-fear. This feature has all the characters left in Toy Story 3, both from Andy's room and now with Bonnie's toys.

In the story, Jesse, the lovable yodeling cowgirl with the loud voice and tough personality, has to face her claustrophobia. This fear was revealed in Toy Story 2 when she refused to go back into storage.

A new character was introduced. Combat Carl, (referred in Toy Story as the toy which Sid blows up) played by Carl Weathers, former football star who is remembered as Apollo Creed in the Rocky series.

The review from Collider:  "Director Angus MacLane pulls a clever bait-and-switch by leading us to believe that since this is a TV special and all of the other shorts have been cutesy, Toy Story of Terror! will simply be in the same vein with a holiday spin.  But then MacLane slowly amps up the tension by starting to blend in a slasher approach to his film before revealing something that actually has us fearing for the fate of the characters, or at least insofar as the toys have a legitimate reason to be terrified. And when it comes to Jessie, her terror is the most profound.  MacLane could have simply rested on a far softer story, but by putting the emphasis on Jessie having to confront her fear, he comes up with a strong conflict that has us cheering for the character as she deals with serious odds.

Toy Story of Terror! goes above and beyond a typical animated holiday special and also surpasses the shorts that came before.  Granted, the time constraints put the new short in a separate class, but in terms of the places its willing to go, MacLane proves the Toy Story shorts don't have to be devoid of drama if they're given enough room to breathe.  Bolstered by some stunning, photo-realistic backgrounds, Toy Story of Terror! is another step forward for the beloved franchise."

Pixar's half-hour Halloween special "Toy Story of Terror" garnered a strong 3.0 rating and 10.29 million viewers, ensuring the short will be a staple of ABC's lineup for plenty of Halloweens to come.
