Jason Kidd Retirement Ceremony Inspires Brooklyn Nets To Win Past Heat

Jason Kidd's legacy in the National Basketball Association has been immortalized as the Brooklyn Nets retired his New Jersey Nets Jersey in Barclays Center in Brooklyn yesterday.

The former Nets guard's retirement ceremony wasn't as emotional as expected, just like in other retirement programs of other athletes as he avoided tears in front of the hometown crowd. The former MVP just wanted to finish the formal procedure and go through with the pre-season game to take away the distractions while doing his coaching duties for the match.

The humble rookie coach desired the ceremony to occur during the pre-season because he wanted the attention to be on his players and not on him.

"I don't know if anyone's had their number retired and had to go to work," Kidd said before the game. "I'm a rookie coach. So this game, (the ceremony) being (in the) preseason is something I wanted. I wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible and then get back to my team."

"We can do it right now," the former Nets star said earlier this week after a preseason game. "Just want it quick. (Doing it before the regular season) was my choice. During training camp would be even better. It's not about me. It's about the players."

During his time with the team, the former point guard led the Nets to reach the NBA finals for two consecutive seasons but fell short to the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs, respectively.

"I used to enjoy playing in the Swamp (in East Rutherford). This is a little bit better arena, but we've had some big crowds in Jersey," Kidd joked. "Opening night - 4,000, 5,000 fans. We were rocking."

The Nets defeated the Wade-less Miami Heat in last night's game with the final score of 86-62, their last home game for the pre-season.
