Apple Cuts Down Iphone 5c Orders: Consumers Prefer More Expensive 5s Than Plastic-backed 5c

Apple cuts down Iphone 5c orders despite positive reviews and great marketing. The company has asked its top 2 suppliers to cut down its production for Iphone 5c for the last three months of the year, according to The Wall Street Journal. The plastic-backed colored Iphone is not so hot after all.

Pegatron Corp., one of the major suppliers for Iphone 5c was asked to slash its production for the plastic-backed phone by 20 percent, according to a source who remains to be unidentified.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, another top assembly contractor for the 5C, had its orders for the same period reduced by a third, reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The plastic-backed Iphone is not competing well with the android devices despite price chops from Walmart, Target and other U.S. retailers. The margin between the 5s and 5c is narrow, thus making the consumers opt for either the pricier Iphone or a more budget friendly android phone.

This actually benefits the company more, since the company's shares increased on Wedsnesday, with a one month high above $502. Apple's flagship phone is outselling the 5c by 2.5 times to 1, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley.

"Survey work indicates a significantly higher sell-through mix of iPhone 5s versus 5c that should benefit near-term Average Selling Prices and margins," Walkley added.

Brian Colello an analyst from Morningstar said, "We're not especially concerned with 5C order cuts at this point because they appear to be offset by strong demand and increased production for the 5S." "As far as emerging markets, the 5C is simply not cheap enough to gain traction with customers that can buy $150 Android devices."

Apple will release its fiscal fourth quarter results later this month. However the numbers from July-September will include sales of only a month of the new models.

Pegatron and Hon Hai both declined to comment, while Apple is currently unreachable for a comment.
