iPhone 5s and 5c Comparison Update: Consumers Prefer Space Grey and Blue Over Other Color Variants According To Consumer Intelligence Research Partners

Apple just released its latest iPhones in two different variants last September 20, the traditional aluminum iPhone 5s and the new plastic-backed, polycarbonate iPhone 5c.

iPhone 5s and 5c comparison: Basically iPhone 5s is made to replace last year's iPhone 5 model with minor yet convincing modifications such as:

  • additional design feature (fingerprint sensor)
  • a slightly crisper display with its 500 cd/m2 (nit) peak brightness and Oleophobic coating
  • a longer battery life to support endless apps
  • 720p HD with120 fps camera recording
  • faster Apple A7 with 64-bit processor
  • 3 color options (silver, space grey and gold)

On the other hand, iPhone 5c is made specifically for consumers on a budget yet still wants to experience Apple's much talked about handsets. In comparison with last year's model of iPhone this cheaper iPhone handset has barely no difference aside for its physical attributes. Oh and of course its 5 color options (white, pink, yellow, blue and green)

Moreover, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), two colors from both iPhone 5s and 5c are significantly more popular over iPhone's other color variants. More than 40 percent of the consumers who purchased iPhone 5s chose space grey while 30 percent picked silver and the other 27 went for gold. Space grey is widely available in the market as compared to silver and gold, however consumers have showed a preference for the black variant with previous iPhone models.

Furthermore, with iPhone 5c model stats show that 27 percent of the consumers chose blue, 25 percent for white, 21 percent for green, 20 percent for pink and the least popular color with only seven percent is yellow. Survey came from 400 consumers who bought the iPhones a month after the launch.

A break down by gender shows that women prefer silver iPhone 5s, while men prefer the space grey variant. Gold was equally divided between both male and female consumers. Looking over iPhone 5c men clearly prefer white and blue variants while female are lemming towards the pink variant.

Mike Levin, CIRP partner and co-founder expressed his thoughts about the difference between gender preference through Macrumors saying:

"iPhone 5S and 5C colors seem to confirm some traditional gender biases. In the iPhone 5C, men prefer the neutral white, and the Space Gray in the iPhone 5S. In contrast, women prefer lighter silver 5S and the brighter iPhone 5C colors. Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the Yellow iPhone 5C very much."

On other note, due to the inconsistent availability of all color variants of iPhone 5s, CIRP's data may project an incomplete analysis of the color preference for the said phone. It could be that consumers who prefer the gold iPhone where forced to choose another color due to its availability problems. However, iPhone 5c's data is more likely accurate and reliable, as all color variants, are widely available on the market.
