'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Episode 5 Recap: Painful Goodbyes And Surprising Family Reunions In ‘Monster Ball’

The Mystic Falls crew discovers that Bonnie is already dead after sacrificing her life for Jeremy. They likewise learn that it is Bonnie's ghost who sent them e-mails all throughout summer to let them become used to her absence. Bonnie's friends especially Caroline and Elena felt anger but eventually said goodbye to her through a touching memorial.

Caroline and Elena return to university as per Bonnie's request. Each one of them deals with Bonnie's loss in a different way. Caroline chooses to spend time with Tyler whereas Elena concentrates on Dr. Maxfield.

Nadia is still keeping Katherine but they're being hunted by Silas who will not stop searching for Katherine since her blood is the newfound cure for immortality.

Damon plans to bring Bonnie back by making a deal with Silas. However, Bonnie warns Jeremy that Silas might be planning to ruin the entire race of supernatural beings because he wanted to reunite with his fiancée who died as a human.

The episode's most surprising reveal is the reunion of Katherine and Nadia. Katherine allegedly murdered Nadia's mother in 1645 during her visit to Paris. As a stepping stone for revenge, Nadia turned herself into a vampire just to hunt the culprit behind her mother's death. Katherine confronts Nadia for she knew that the murder story was fabricated. Nadia dropped the bomb by saying, "I was testing you. You, Katherine, are my mother."

The gang then went to the Halloween Party where a series of action-packed events took place.  A confrontation happened between Qetsiyah and Silas. Dr. Maxfield likewise arrives in the party confirming that he knows the real identity of Elena and her friends. He warns them to go back to Mystic Falls.

Caroline and Tyler's reunion is just temporary since Tyler is more determined to look for Klaus than to stay in Mystic Falls as a good boyfriend. "Just be the love of my life. Love me more than you hate him," pleads Caroline but Tyler apologizes, says he cannot do such thing, and leaves.

In the episode's final scene, Katherine finds Elena and Damon talking. She notices Silas' lifeless body and before she gets the chance to rejoice, Katherine's neck becomes a life source for Silas. Katherine is supposedly dead but her voice resurfaces saying, "Am I in hell?"

Why is Katherine still alive? What will Silas do to pursue his mission?
