NYC Marathon Winners: Kenyan Runners Clinch Men's And Women's Victories For The Third Time In History

The New York City Marathon on Sunday was dominated by Kenyan runners and winners Geoffrey Mutai and Priscah Jeptoo, taking home the men's and women's victories for the NYC Marathon. For the third time in history, Kenyans were the first place winners of the NYC Marathon.

According to AP, via ABC News, the last time the NYC Marathon was held - which was in 2011 - Mutai broke the course record. This was his second NYC Marathon win.

Last year's race was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy. This year, the attacks from the Boston Marathon meant more security at the NYC Marathon; barricades blocked off much of the park Sunday, and fans waited in bag-check lines to get in, AP reports.

Mutai pulled away around Mile 22 and beat Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede by 52 seconds. Mutai's time of 2 hours, 8 minutes, 24 seconds was well off his course record of 2:05:06 set two years ago. He's the first man to repeat in New York since Kenya's John Kagwe in 1997-98, according to AP.

"To win this course twice, it's not easy," Mutai said. "For me, it's a glory."

Sunday's race marked the third time that Kenyans have swept New York's Marathon, officials said.

Priscah Jeptoo took home the victory for the women's category in the NYC Marathon. She won with a time of 2:25:07, NBC News reports

Following up her victory in the London Marathon, Jeptoo's time in New York earned her the World Marathon Majors title and a $500,000 bonus.

"I train well, and I was in good shape," Jeptoo said, according to AP. "So I tried to push myself to see that I am supposed to close the gap before they reach 40 kilometers (25 miles). When they reach 40 kilometers, it could be difficult for me to close the gap."
