Is Android 5.0 release date slated for next year?

Now that the Android 4.4 KitKat has been released, the mobile world is already starting to speculate about the next iteration of the Google mobile operating system, thus, the emergence of rumors about Android 5.0 release date.

On October 31, Google finally released its latest minor update, the Android 4.4 KitKat, clearing the way for the Android 5.0. And since Google is not expected to make any official announcements about the Android 5.0 release date soon, all that has surfaced online regarding the OS are purely rumors and speculations only.

Folks from Tech Radar were guessing that Android 5.0 release date will be set for mid-2014. A post from their site reads, "Until Android 4.4 was announced we had expected the Android 5.0 release date to be some time in October 2013. We instead saw Android 4.4 KitKat launch on 31 October and in the face of that point release, we think it's now likely that we'll see Android 5.0 shown in mid-2014..."

Furthermore, the post regarding Android 5.0 release date also suggested that the OS will most likely be announced at Google IO, which is a 2-day developer conference hosted by the internet search giant in San Francisco every year.

Furthermore, Android OS are usually given a dessert-theme name, thus, it is also safe to assume that Android 5.0's code name will have something to do with sweets and confections. Also, Tech Radar supposes the code name for Android 5.0 will begin with the letter 'L' suggesting possible labels such as Lemon Cheesecake or Lemon Meringue Pie.

News about Android 5.0 release date is still scarce but there's definitely more to come especially when 2014 arrives. Meanwhile, as for news about the release of Android 4.4 KitKat, the OS is expected to arrive on Nexus devices such as the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10.
