NBA 2014 Dunk Contest – Victor Oladipo Likely Candidate [VIDEO] Together With Other Rising Stars On The Radar; Will Lebron Finally Join?

This early, there are already prospects for the NBA 2014 All Star dunk contest. Strong rookie Victor Oladipo has made his own statement.

The NBA dunk contest used to be a much-awaited classic. It has taken quite a beating the last few years, though. Most observers have noted the lack of star power. It has actually been renamed the ‘Rising Stars’ Dunk Challenge because most of the contestants are either rookies or sophomores intent on gaining some recognition.

Another factor is that most dunks have already been done before. The last few years saw the dunk contest become a platform for gimmicks like laser suits, cupcakes and the infamous Kia car that Blake Griffin jumped over and propelled a hefty endorsement deal.

There’s some rumors about rising stars becoming interested in the dunk contest. Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs, who became a household name after the Finals, is being enticed to show his aggressive side through his dunks. Leonard is usually silent and reserved, according to his teammates.

The biggest boost to the dunk contest would be the long standing rumor that Lebron James would join. The 4-time MVP has never joined the dunk contest and despite public challenges and dares. He says that he would ‘consider’ if the prize money was up to $1 Million.

Would it be worth it? Sprite is the long-time sponsor of the contest and is probably reluctant to shell out the entire amount. However, if they raise the stakes and Lebron actually joins, all the other superstars will definitely have a reason to take part. It should be an event in itself, and not just part of the All-Star festivities.

In the meantime, we have rookies like Victor Oladipo. His 360 degree breakaway dunk off a steal from Deron Williams would definitely merit a ‘10’ rating. The Orlando Sentinel asked Oladipo on his motivation for that dunk. He responded, "My teammates kept telling me to be aggressive. I just listened."
