NBA Trade Rumors – Rajon Rondo For Greg Monroe? Andre Drummond Dominates As The Pistons’ Big Man For The Future

The deadline for signing contract extensions for the draft class of 2010 has passed. The most notable ones are max contracts for the first overall pick (John Wall) and the best of the batch, Paul George.

There were a lot of question marks and head scratchers, though. The biggest candidates left out were Gordon Hayward of the Utah Jazz and Greg Monroe of the Detroit Pistons.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Pistons did not even consider it.

"There's a reason why you haven't heard a lot about Greg Monroe's contract situation-there's nothing to report. It's highly likely that the fourth-year power forward won't receive a contract extension from the Pistons before the Halloween deadline, meaning Monroe will be a restricted free agent next off-season."

Thus, Greg Monroe is eligible to become a restricted free agent at the end of next season. The Pistons can match, but the question is, why didn't they just lock him in this season when they had the chance (before the October 31 deadline). This means they are not decided on Greg Monroe yet. They need to see how he would jell with new acquisition Josh Smith.

There is also the dominating play of Andre Drummond. While Greg Monroe is a smart and solid center, he is not offensively dominating like Drummond. If the Pistons had to choose between the two (since they took Josh Smith, they probably need to) they would take Drummond.

While Detroit decides on which is their center for the future, other teams don't even have a competent center to begin with. Monroe is a no-brainer for them.

The Boston Celtics are a team that totally blew up their lineup and start over for the future. They have one trade asset, Rajon Rondo. While the Pistons were still seeking a starting point guard, they pursued Rondo but the Celtics were asking for no less than Andre Drummond. The Pistons promptly said 'No.'

What if the Celtics reconsider, and just ask for Monroe and other assets, like the newly acquired Brandon Jennings? Contract complications would still be in play, but both have enough resources to make it work.

What is certain is that the Pistons team is a work in progress and the moves this year are not final.
