‘Mad Men’ Season 7: Splitting Up Final Season Is ‘A Very Wise Move,’ Harry Hamlin Says; Extra Time May Attract More Viewers

"Mad Men" season 7 is being split up into two parts, and Harry Hamlin, who plays ad executive Jim Cutler, thinks that this is a smart move made by AMC for "Mad Men" season 7.

The first seven episodes of "Mad Men" season 7 will premiere in Spring 2014, and the other seven episodes will air in Spring 2015. Season 7 will be the final season for "Mad Men."

Fans of the show "Breaking Bad" will know that AMC also chose to split up the final season of that show in the same way.

Harry Hamlin, who became part of the "Mad Men" cast in season 6, spoke to USA Today about this decision to split up season 7.

"I think it's a very wise move. What they discovered with 'Breaking Bad' is that by giving it an extra year, they were able to attract an extra God-knows-how-many people to the show. There were a lot of people, including my wife, who had never gotten into 'Breaking Bad.' Because of that longer time frame, she then spent the summer watching the whole thing," Hamlin said.

"It's probably the way these shows are going to evolve from now on. The new "summer reading" is going to be downloading an entire lifespan of one of these shows."

Hamlin believes that by splitting up season 7, this will give more time for viewers to be attracted to "Mad Men," and therefore more viewers who will tune in for those last seven episodes of the successful show.

USA Today tried to get Hamlin to reveal some spoilers, but Hamlin said the script is top-secret. While on his way to the first gathering of the "Mad Men" cast for season 7, Hamlin said, "we're very secretive about the scripts. They make them on a special paper, so as soon as you turn the last page, they just disintegrate."
