"We made strides as far as our competitiveness," said coach Todd McLellan, whose team had two goals on the power play after a 3-for-28 slump. "But I still don't think we're at our best."

Captain Joe Thornton also saw positive signs Sunday even though San Jose fell to 1-4 in shootouts and recorded its longest losing streak since February.

"It was better," Thornton said. "We still got loose a couple of times out there. We're just unable to finish right now. We just have to get better each day and get two points in Calgary."

Calgary is coming off a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, though NHL.com said that the Flames outplayed them.

"This league, it's not a feel-good league," coach Bob Hartley said. "Moral victories do not exist, you need to put points on the board."

Hartley's team is giving up 3.53 goals per game, second-worst in the league, but hopes the addition of veteran defenseman Ladislav Smid can provide some help. Smid was the focal point of a four-player trade with Edmonton on Friday, according to NHL.com.

"I've seen Calgary play this year and that's their identity: they work hard. They never quit. That's what I like," Smid told the team's official website. "I'm really excited to be part of the Flames now."
