Android Market Share Now Over 80 Percent, Windows Phone Share Up By 156 Percent Year Over Year

The Android market share is consistenly increasing over the past couple of years, widening the gap between them and the nearest rival, iOS. But now, it appears the Apple-made platform is slowly conceding its defeat as its own share of the pie continues to dip year over year.

In a report released by IDC, Android remains at the top of the food chain with over 80 percent of the market share in Q3 2013, thanks to a wide range of devices from entry-level up to high-end. iOS remains in second with 12.9 percent this quarter, down from 14.4 percent during the same period last year.

However, the biggest winner is Windows Phone which now stands in third with 9.5 million shipments during the third quarter, up from 3.7 million last year - which leads to an increase of 156% year-over-year.

According to the statement by IDC, Android and Windows Phone have one thing in common that allows them to consistently increase their bite of the pie - price. Apple may have the biggest share as far as profit is concerned, but a platform's dominance may also be decided by its influence and scope in the market.

"Both platforms have a selection of devices available at prices low enough to be affordable to the mass market, and it is the mass market that is driving the entire market forward", says ID analyst Ramon Llamas.
