‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Movie Release Date Postponed, But Not Because Of Charlie Hunnam Exit: Premiere Pushed Back ‘Even If Charlie Had Stayed’

"Fifty Shades of Grey" movie release date has been postponed to Valentine's Day weekend in 2015. The film's new release date is Feb. 13, 2015. The "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie release date would have been pushed back even if Charlie Hunnam hadn't dropped out as Christian Grey, according to Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley.

"Together with the international marketing and distribution team, we've been looking really closely at the August date and becoming more and more convinced that the right thing to do for the movie was to push it," Langley said, Entertainment Weekly reports. "So even if Charlie had stayed, we still would have been making the date change."

The planned release date prior to this announcement was Aug. 1, 2014, The Huffington Post reports. However, fans speculated that "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie release date would be postponed after Charlie Hunnam dropped out and forfeited his role as Christian Grey right as the movie was to begin filming.

After Hunnam left, producers cast Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey. The Hollywood Reporter revealed in October that the cast shake-up forced "Fifty Shades of Grey" production to shift from November to December 2 of this year, The Huffington Post reports.

Valentine's Day weekend in 2015 also coincides with the President's Day holiday, giving Universal the opportunity to post a big three-day number for the movie, Entertainment Weekly notes.

According to the website, the film's new release date will put it up against the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' "The Longest Ride," which has yet to begin production or hire a cast. The "Fifty Shades" movie, described by Langley as "a global event," may push back the premiere of "The Longest Ride" too.

Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first cast photos of a clean-shaven Jamie Dornan and newly-brunette Dakota Johnson as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, Refinery29 reports.
