Ian Somerhalder, through his recent Instagram post, reveals why he considers himself the luckiest man alive.

"Coming home from work... I'm the luckiest dude in the world. No doubt," the 34-year-old actor wrote as a caption for the Instagram photo which shows him snuggling to his adorable puppies. The puppies' mother is Nietzche whom Somerhalder rescued after wandering at the 'Vampire Diaries' set in Atlanta, Georgia.

Somerhalder was supposed to have Nietzche spayed but when the veterinarian "opened up" the dog, they found puppies prompting the actor to halt the process. When Nietzche gave birth to her 8 puppies, fans of Somerhalder rejoiced as well as his co-star and ex-girlfriend Nina Dobrev.

It is no secret that the 'Lost' actor actively uses social media to raise people's awareness on environmental issues as well as animal rights. He is likewise working on a campaign which aspires to stop the overpopulation of cats and dogs. For Somerhalder, overpopulation is the main reason for stray animals.

Recently, TVD's Damon Salvatore publicized his search for a special girl who could serve as an environmental advocate through films. The actor will serve as a judge for the Girls Impact the World Film Festival wherein interested ladies can send their videos showing their solutions for key environmental issues.
