Katy Perry And Russell Brand Split Caused By Pop Singer’s Refusal To Have Kids; ‘I Knew I Wasn’t Ready For It,’ Says ‘Dark Horse’ Singer

Fans were disheartened when Katy Perry and Russell Brand's marriage abruptly ended. While some criticized the British comedian for divorcing the pop singer through a text message, the 'Unconditionally' hit maker remained silent with regards to the reason why their union did not work out.

However, in a recent interview with Marie Claire, the 'Dark Horse' singer hints that one of the reasons why she and Brand parted ways was her refusal to have children right away: " [He] really wanted me to have children, and I knew I wasn't ready- I think it was a way of control. I think it was part of, If I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice - I'd have to be at home more. I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn't ready for it. It wasn't like, 'Hey, let's have a kid because we're in love.'"

She adds that during that time, she cannot plan too far in advance yet. In the same interview, she confesses that she once took time to be apart from her current boyfriend John Mayer.

"It was like a splash of cold water to search inward on what was going on with me. I still needed to deal with all of my ex-husband stuff. I hadn't," explains Perry as to why she took a break.

Although painful, she says that she got something good from her temporary split with the 'Your Body Is a Wonderland' singer: "That [breakup] is what led me to this new awakening, this realizing, If I don't do some self-love, I'm not going to be able to keep the love that I want."

If there's one thing Perry realized, it's the significance of valuing one's self. Such realization has been expressed in one of her newest singles, 'Love Me': "If you put your self-love in someone else's hands, then you can't control it when it breaks or when they toss it out. I wrote something down after a session with my therapist: 'I don't want to lose myself in fear of losing him."

She also reveals some of the things which make her fall in love further with her beau: "He's just a fantastic partner. I've been a fan of his for such a long time. He's got a brilliant, brilliant mind. It's a rad, mature relationship."
