Montreal had limited opponents to 19 goals during a 9-0-1 stretch before suffering back-to-back losses, 6-0 to Los Angeles on Tuesday and 2-1 at Philadelphia on Thursday. The Canadiens, though, bounced back two days later with a 1-0 overtime road win over the New York Islanders.

"We were absolutely more intense," coach Michel Therrien told ESPN.com. "We wanted to be physical. We wanted to play a hard-nosed game. This is something we didn't do the last two games, and guys responded well."

Carey Price made 21 saves to record his second shutout. Price lowered his goals-against average to 2.00, the NHL's sixth-lowest mark.

"That was a really good hard-fought win," Price told ESPN.com. "We played a really solid game from start to finish. We knew it would be low scoring game, and we're playing really well, patiently waiting for our chance. The effort was there all night."

Scott Clemmensen had gone winless while posting a 3.89 GAA in his first five games before making 23 saves against the Capitals as he will get more time with Tim Thomas out with an undisclosed injury that he suffered earlier in the week.

"December whatever it is, my first win of the season," Clemmensen told the team's official website. "It's been a long road here and (I) just kind of stick with it. Hey, we got the win regardless and the boys were kind enough to bestow the hat upon me tonight."
