The glory days of boy band seems to have opened with FTISLAND, CNBLUE and Busker Busker raging on music chart. They are grabbing top places with each song released through popular song and strong fan base and is breaking the boundary of idol group and rock band.

It’s interesting to take note that although FTISLAND and CNBLUE has received popularity over the past few years there hasn’t been any successful case of girl bands yet. This is a bit different from how the introduction of boy groups such as TVXQ, Super Junior led to emerging of girl groups such as Wonder Girls, Girls’ Generation.

Even more the girl band vocalists that were loved by the public such as Kim Yoon Ah of Jaurim, Cho Youjeen of Cherry Filter, and Choi Jin Yi of Rumble Fish are not able to find the next generation vocalists. Meanwhile many agencies have emulated Avril Lavigne and produced girl bands however there aren’t any successful case.

This is due to extreme stagnation of rock music worldwide however boy band found a solution to connect with idols while on the other hand girl band hasn’t been able to find their own place.

A producer that recently tried to produce a girl band that abandoned their launch shared, “As there aren’t that many girl bands that are successful locally and abroad, it’s not that easy to find role model for trainees. Boy bands that are like idols have a strong fan base due to those who like rock music however for girl bands it was even difficult to research the market to see what kind of image would draw in fans as its unprecedented so it was difficult in planning the steps.”

Music critic Kang Tae Gyu commented, “As rock genre is masculine it’s very rare for a girl band to have any musical achievement even worldwide. Furthermore as rock has been turned away from broadcast it’s difficult for a hit song to come out following Cherry Filter’s ‘Romantic Cat.’ Therefore it would be a very a high risk even for agency to plan a new model for bands.”
