FIFA World Cup To Use ‘Magical’ Vanishing Spray; What Did Top Football Officials Think About It?

The FIFA World Cup in Brazil next year is expected to become a world of fun and festivities. Expect to see magic too as the world's governing body revealed that it is going to use a "vanishing" spray for the June 2014 sports event.

FIFA chief Joseph Blatter announced that the competition will utilize a water-based vanishing spray to designate distances for free kicks, making the game a lot easier to officiate. This new technology is now being used in the Club World Cup in Morocco.

"We started using it in all competitions this year and at the World Cup we will definitely keep on the same path," Blatter said Thursday in front of media. "For the discipline of the game, it's good. I was skeptical at first, but after talking to referees who used this system, they were all happy with it."

"The representative of Bayern Munich said that here they can take free kicks with the wall 9 meters away, while at home it's only 5. It was novelty."

FIFA describe this innovation as environmentally, and player, friendly technology. It was invented in Brazil by Pablo Silva and has been in development since 2007. Vanishing Spray is also meant to prevent attackers from manipulating their position during free kick and avoid defenders from sneaking within the 10-yard limit.

"We've climbed a long, steep curve to get here," Silva said in an interview with the Associated Press.

"Economically, this will be very important for us, but what makes us most proud is that the product will be recognized at an international level. You can't put a price on that."

Vanishing Spray is the second technology to be introduced by FIFA for the quadrennial football event. The goal-line technology was introduced in 2012 after controversial calls were made in the Premier League, 2010 World Cup, and the Euro 2012. The technology, which has just received the approval of the FIFA Strategic Committee today, uses an electronic device to determine if the ball has completely crossed the goal line.
