Farrah Fawcett Painting Andy Warhol To Stay With Ryan O’Neal

Ryan O'Neal will get to keep a painting of Farrah Fawcett that was done by Andy Warhol.

Ryan O'Neal won the court case against the University of Texas and will be allowed to keep an Andy Warhol painting of Farrah Fawcett at his home.

The actor best known for his role in "Love Story" was in a relationship with the Farrah Fawcett from 1979 until her death from cancer in 2009. Ryan O'Neal was taken to court by the University of Texas, who claimed Fawcett left them the painting in her will. The Andy Warhol paintings of Farrah Fawcett have been valued at up to $12 million.

Ryan O'Neal admitted that Farrah left her art collection to the U of Texas, but said the specific painting by Warhol had been given to him by Warhol himself. O'Neal said the painting was a gift for arranging the session.

The University of Texas board of regents sued and Ryan O'Neal counter-sued. Ryan says it was always the plan that Farrah got one of the paintings and he got the other. His suit also wants to take back the "Warhol napkin," a sketch Warhol made of split hearts on a cloth napkin when they at dinner. The "Warhol napkin" is in the hands of the University of Texas.

The University of Texas says Fawcett had control and ownership of the second image from at least 1998 until her 2009 death when O'Neal took the portrait.

Estimates put the painting at between $12 million to $30 million. It is insured for $900,000. The "Warhol Napkin" is worth about $3,500.

Andy Warhol's 1980 portrait depicts Farrah Fawcett with bright green eyes, eye makeup and very red lips. It was done in Warhol's famed silkscreen pop art style.

Farrah Fawcett died of cancer in 2009. She was 62. Before she went to Hollywood, she studied art at the University of Texas at Austin. When she died she left all her artwork to the school in a living trust. The school found out through Fawcett's secret Texas boyfriend that there were two portraits of Farrah Fawcett by Andy Warhol.  One was on display at the University of Texas's Blanton Museum of Art. The other one, the school found out after hiring a private detective, was hanging in Ryan O'Neal's Malibu home. It was clearly seen in the 2011 reality TV show, "Ryan and Tatum."

Soon after Fawcett died, O'Neal took his portrait from the actress's home soon with permission from the trustee of her belongings.

Attorneys for the University of Texas used footage from Farrah Fawcett's reality show and a segment from the TV news show 20/20 to discredit O'Neal's claims.

The footage from the reality program showed Fawcett discussing what she might do with the two Warhol portraits with the owner of an auction. In the footage, Farrah says she is thinking about selling one of the two paintings. Lawyers for Ryan O'Neal's pointed out that Fawcett never never said on camera that she owned both pieces of art.

The 72-year-old Ryan O'Neil said the picture is one of his most prized possessions. In his testimony he said "I talk to it. I talk to her. It's her presence. Her presence in my life. In her son's life."

Ryan O'Neal and Farrah Fawcett have a son Redmond, 28. O'Neal hopes to one day pass it down to him.
