Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Review, Update: Firmware Upgrade Pulled After Error Code Issue Persists; Microsoft Expected To Release New Update After Holiday Season

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 review and update: The Redmond tech giant has been tweaking the functionality and battery life of the Surface Pro 2 since the tablet has been launched. A firmware update has been released to fix the problem but instead of making things better, it created issues.

Slashgear reports that users began reporting errors as soon as the update was published. The error code 800704490 is seen when users try and install the update. It has become so widespread and as a result, Microsoft pulled the update to give the best experience for tablet buyers and users during the holidays.

According to Microsoft, it will release an alternative update package after the holidays. Some users have reported that the battery life of their tablet worsened after installing the update.

MICROSOFT SURFACE PRO 2 REVIEW

It has a 10.6-inch ClearType display, speedy processor and desktop-like storage and Microsoft touts it as the “tablet to replace your laptop.” According to Microsoft, it has a “Heart of a laptop. Body of a tablet.” and is designed for the power user who doesn’t stand still.” But what seems to take aback many is its steep $899 entry-level price.

SPECS
In a review by Phone Arena, it noted that the Surface Pro 2 has the same 10.6” display like its predecessor. The ClearType display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels but only has a pixel density of 208 ppi. Despite the ppi, the tech site said that the display has 46% better color accuracy and record low reflectivity. Powered by a core i5 processor, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 makes strides in battery life compared to its predecessor. The Surface Pro 2 is also much quieter.

The tablet is also equipped with a 1 megapixel camera, 4GB of RAM memory and starts at 64GB of built-in storage. For a tablet, the Surface Pro 2 has a lot of RAM power and for storage, has other variants that allows up to 512GB in storage - almost as much as an all-in-one or desktop PC.

PROS & CONS
According to CNET huge plus for the Windows 8.1 Pro table is its faster speed and longer battery life. Compared to its predecessor, Surface Pro, the keyboard cover has also improved with backlit keys and is coupled with some of the best accessories for a tablet.

Phone Arena cites the Surface Pro 2’s low pixel density screen (as mentioned earlier), lack of a GPS and the tablet’s camera lacking autofocus and flash as some of the mishaps for this gadget. The thick and heavy look of the Surface Pro 2 and the keyboard cover being sold separately are two main minuses for the Surface Pro 2 in CNET’s review.

VERDICT

The Surface Pro 2, no matter how put it is still a useful device. But the main barrier to this unit is the price, which meets a lot of competition especially on ultraportables and notebooks that have the same capability as the Windows-powered tablet.
