World’s Cheapest Tablet: $38 UbiSlate 7Ci Tablet Runs Has 1GHz Processor, 4GB Storage, 7-inch Display; ‘We Want To Reach A Customer Not On The Internet’ Says CEO

World’s cheapest tablet is $38. The UbiSlate 7Ci has specs that’s enough for the new Internet user to be introduced to the world wide web. The tablet runs on Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and runs on 1GHz processor, 4GB storage and sports a 7-inch display with 800 x 480 pixels.

“Affordability shouldn’t be the reason people can’t get on the Internet,” Datawind, the tablet’s manufacturer, CEO Suneet Sing Tuli told the Wall Street Journal. “We want to specifically reach a customer base that is not on the Internet.”

Tuli shared with The Journal that he wants to sell devices and also reach children who have limited access to the Web, or no connectivity at home.

Datawind announced last week its plan to sell a $38 tablet in the U.S., which it’ll make available online and in brick and mortar stores. The London-based company has yet to announced where the tablets can be sold. Datawind will have three low-cost tablet variants available from $38 to as much as $149 with varying specs and capabilities.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Datawind’s tablets won’t impress anyone with their performance or design. A major factor on why the units are very affordable is because the components inside are outdated by today’s computing standards, which makes the devices relatively inexpensive to manufacture, Tuli said.
