Windows Phone Market Share: 3 Reasons Why Growth Of Microsoft's Mobile Platform Ain't Enough

Windows Phone market share has greatly increased year over year across the world. According to a Supersite Windows writer Paul Thurrott, the platform managed to notch 3.6 percent of the world's smartphone market, up from 2.8 percent the previous year.

However, considering WP is product of a loud and proud company such as Microsoft, getting that much of the market may not be enough.

Don't get me wrong. A 28.57 percent of growth is something worth celebrating for. In comparison, the iOS's market share dropped to 13 from 14 percent last year, while Android already notched more than 80 percent of the entire market.

This just means Windows Phone market share for this year can already be considered a success story, but it isn't enough. Here are 3 reasons why:

1. A steady increase will only continue to make WP an 'alternative' for smartphone users - If the platform gets the same 28% increase in 2014, it will only have over 4 percent of the market, which would show that it is just a cheaper or practical option for consumers.

2. The WP platform's rise can easily be attributed to Blackberry's fall - Some analysts say that Windows Phone sales increased mainly because those from Blackberry OS changed their loyalty amidst the company's struggle for survival.

3. Counting shipment numbers are not enough to compete in the market - Windows Phone may have an increase of 150 percent in mobile shipments, but if these phones are worth far less than the competition, then it cannot expect its overall share to go up. Microsoft should be able to take on the other platform's flagship phones next year.

Windows Phone market share may indeed be progressing, but its success is still within the expectations of analysts a year ago. Unless Microsoft is able to come up with a revolutionary plan to boost its sales, it will forever remain as the far third among the top smartphone platforms in the world today.
