DreamWorks, Netflix Unveil Their 1st Co-Produced Animation Series; Studio Expected To Produce Dozen More For The Streaming In The Next Three Years

Netflix, the internet streaming media behind cult hit series House of Cards, Arrested Development, and Orange is the New Black, has expanded its entertainment offering. This time, the new series it will stream is meant for kids and kids at heart.

On Christmas Eve, Netflix welcomed Turbo Fast from animation giant DreamWorks. Turbo Fast is the first from many made-for-TV shows from the studio behind hit animated movies like Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and Shrek. This animate series, which is a spin-off of the summer movie about a team of racing snails, is expected to run in Netflix for 300 hours and will feature an ensemble voicing cast that includes Reid Scott ("Veep") and Keon Jong.

This partnership between the Glendale-based entertainment studio and the streaming media service marks the biggest push into original kids' programming for Netflix. According to the deal, DreamWorks will produce a dozen series based on characters from its movies over the next three years. This also includes the ones they recently acquired from Classic Media library like Rocky and Bullwinkle, Lassie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, and Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The studio will receive licensing fees from Netflix, which will be the one to pay for the programming rights.

For DreamWorks, the deal will be a big boost for them to become a known brand promoting family entertainment.

"It's an enormous order," said Margie Cohn, head of television for DreamWorks Animation.

"It really takes DreamWorks from being a movie company to being a branded family entertainment company. Instead of having just one or two engagements with DreamWorks Animation every year, you now have a daily engagement."

For Netflix, the deal serves as their biggest move to lure viewers of all ages.

"Animated content reaches kids at a variety of ages, and the kids' offering is very important to us because it's a way to increase the value of our service," said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix.
