'The Wolf of Wall Street' Movie Receives Mixed Reviews But Jordan Belfort’s ‘Masterpiece’ Leads Holiday Box Office

Martin Scorsese's three-hour movie, "The Wolf of Wall Street," received mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers alike, but Leonardo DiCaprio as stockbroker Jordan Belfort generated enough interest to lead the holiday box office, raking in $10 million on Wednesday.

While most movie critics hailed the movie, particularly the imposing on-screen presence of DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort, it still received a C rating from CinemaScore.

CinemaScore is an online poll of moviegoers on opening night to gauge their sentiments about a particular film. For a bit of context, the audience disliked the Jordan Belfort bio more than "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," which received a B rating.

However, Katey Rich of Vanity Fair wrote that "The Wolf of Wall Street" movie managed to achieve what it intended: to create a buzz around it.

"Whatever it is that The Wolf of Wall Street is actually doing, it's succeeding in its main goal over a crowded holiday period-getting people to talk about it," she said.

Meanwhile, Peter Travers of Rolling Stone said: "It is hilarious, it is scathing, it is a picture of America that offers no sentiment. Scorsese tells the truth about America, and if you can take it, boy do you get it in The Wolf of Wall Street."

But Alfonso Duralde wrote for The Wrap that "The Wolf of Wall Street" movie could have used a little bit more editing.

"I've got no objection to a three-hour movie in theory, but Scorsese and his legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker allow the film to repeat itself from time to time, overdoing a tale that is itself already about the act of overdoing it," he said.

The movie about Jordan Belfort managed to edge out "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug ($8.9 million); "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty ($7.5 million)" and "47 Ronin ($6.7 million)" in Christmas box-office sales.
