NBA Trade Rumors – Andrew Bynum For Luol Deng Or Pau Gasol? Cavs Want Assets, Injury-Riddled Teams Look To Save Money On ‘Lost’ Season

The Cleveland Cavaliers are on the headlines again, and it is not a reason to be proud. They have suspended center Andrew Bynum 'indefinitely' and they have declared the intention of trading him-for Lakers center Pau Gasol.

If the talks prosper, the former teammates would now be traded for each other, but Bynum would not have a Lakers comeback. The Tinseltown team would only waive him to save on the luxury tax.

The possible trade scenario was first reported by ESPN LA. The Cleveland Cavaliers are also in talks with Chicago Bulls allegedly for Luol Deng.

Both the Lakers and Bulls are in similar situations: their superstars are injured, the season is considered 'lost' and they are over the luxury tax line. While both teams are in big markets and are also part of the NBA's highest valued franchises (according to Forbes), venturing into luxury tax territory in a losing season is can be very costly. The loss of revenue in attendance as well as playoff coverage advertising (something both teams are accustomed to) can translate into an eight-digit loss.

Cleveland, meanwhile, stands pat on their vow of making the playoffs this season. Cavs want useful assets, and with the scare of a Kyrie Irving injury looming (after their Tuesday game against the Pacers) they might be compelled to pull the trigger sooner.

Pau Gasol's trade to the Lakers in 2008 was met with league-wide outrage. Other teams thought the trade was unfair, as it favored the Lakers. Indeed, the Lakers went on to win 2 championships a season later.

Now, Los Angeles wants to get rid of Pau Gasol, and it's ironic that his former teammate and frontcourt mate is involved. It is also sad that their main contributions were not on the court but on the balance sheet. Speaking to ESPN LA, Pau laments:

"Those coincidences happen. My brother was traded for me. That was kind of ironic. Life's going to have those ironic moments at times."

Gasol scored 25 points in a loss against the Milwaukee Bucks, one of the worst teams in the league. The Lakers are on a dismal 6 game losing streak which strengthens the suggestion of giving up on this season.
