Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Review, News: Windows 8.1 Tablet Gets Secret Upgrade From Core i5-4200U To Core i5-4300U; Update Leads To Significant Increase In Speed

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 review, news: The Windows 8.1 tablet that has captured the attention of consumers and has been sold out twice at the Microsoft Store has received a secret upgrade from the Redmond tech giant.

According to ExtremeTech, the unit received a significant secret CPU upgrade. The company rolled out a new hardware update making the platform more enticing to customers. The Surface Pro 2 now has a Core i5-4300U from Core i5-4200U.

ExtremeTech notes that the 100-point differential hides a lot of changes. The previous chip, the Core i5-4200U is 1.6GHz base and clocks in at 2.6GHz as a turbo chip. The Core i5-4300U clocks in at 1.9GHz base and 2.9GHz turbo, an increase of 19% at the low end and a still significant 11.5% in Turbo mode. The tech site said that the chip also clocks its GPU 100MHz higher and should deliver an improvement of 5-7% in gaming applications.

Other new features that the CPU upgrade to Core i5-4300U brings is support for advanced visualization functions, like Intel’s vPro and VTd. The new chipset also include support for Haswell’s transaction synchronization extension (TSX), which the former chipset lacked. With the new chipset, it’s covered by Intel’s Stable Platform Program, meaning the chip manufacturer guarantees drivers and supports for 15 months.

The update suggests that Microsoft picked a core it thought would appeal to IT professionals who might plan to use the Surface for the on-the-go administration or virtualization tasks, writes ExtremeTech. The upgrade does not change the price of the Surface Pro 2 as it’s expected to stay at $899 for the base model.
