CES 2014 Live: Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s Keynote Address Incl. Words From Katie Couric, Tumblr’s David Karp & Appearance By John Mayer

CES 2014 Live: Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer took the stage at CES Tuesday during a keynote address announcing the newest initiatives of her company. This include a new smartphone app that personalizes news and targeted ads for the Tumblr blogging site, the LA Times report.

Katie Couric, former New York Times tech writer David Pogue, SNL’s Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson as well as musician John Legend were also on stage with Mayer to present the company’s entertainment offerings. David Karp and Nick D’Alosio, both of whom joined Yahoo as executives through acquisition of Tumblr and Summly, respectively, were also with Mayer.

Katie Couric was introduced on stage by Marissa Mayer, the news personality who recently joined Yahoo as Global Anchor. Couric discussed Yahoo’s media business and her role in it. “It really is a blank slate,” Couric says of the possibilities ahead for her at the company.

Tumblr creator and CEO David Karp took the stage to announce that Tumblr ads will be powered by Yahoo advertising. The move will allow advertisers to better target their ads to specific type of users. Yahoo purchased Tumblr last May in a $1.1 billion deal.

The Yahoo CEO also unveiled Yahoo Food and Yahoo Tech, a new website that presents news in a design resembling a magazine. Mayer said that the new sites will feature sponsored articles.

One of the biggest news from the keynote address was the announcement of a smartphone app called Yahoo News Digest. The new app sends users two daily digests filled with personalized news stories and is the creation of teen computer prodigy, Nick D’Aloisio.

The keynote was use as a platform to tout Yahoo’s push in becoming a bigger player in news media and entertainment. According to MarketWatch, one key question remains in its initiatives in advertising where its core businesses are focused and where it continues to struggle.

The keynote address concluded with Mayer bringing out musical artist and singer John Legend, who then began a great rendition of “Here Comes The Sun,” accompanying himself on piano. The music celebrity wrapped up his act with “All of Me,” a song from his latest album.
