Intel CES 2014 Live: CEO Keynote Announces Big Move Into Wearables; Demoed Intel Smartwatch, Earbuds W/ Built-in Heart-Rate Monitor, Smart Headset With Voice Assist

Intel CES 2014 Live: CEO Brian Krzanich, at his first keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show Tuesday in Vegas, announced that the world’s largest semiconductor maker is making a big move into wearables. The Intel exec demonstrated a new smartwatch, earbuds with built-in heart-rate monitor and a smart headset with a digital voice assistant named Jarvis, Forbes.com reported.

Krzanich said that Intel’s smartwatch will have its own connectivity and will won’t need to be bound with another Internet-enabled mobile device like a smartphone. Intel also showed-off a “smart charging bowl,” which powers multiple devices that have been dropped inside as well as a new system-on-a-chip called Edison that will enable new wearable devices. The Intel CEO also announced a $1.3 million contest to find the best ideas for new wearable gadgets and solutions.

According to Forbes.com, the move is a major market push for Intel. The tech giant has experienced mix success in expanding sales of its chips beyond the PCs on which it built its business and into mobile devices. Berg Insights forecasts that sales of smart glasses, smart watches and wearable fitness trackers will reach 64 million units in 2017, up from 8.3 million unit shipped worldwide in 2012.

Intel also says that it aims to make new mobile devices secure and as part of that initiative will make its McAfee security software available for free. The McAfee brand is also being rebranded with its new name, Intel Security.

With the goal of satisfying the demand of users who want to use devices based on Microsoft’s Windows and Google’s Android operating system, Intel announced a dual OS platform that will enable users to seamlessly switch between Windows and Android.
