The 21-18-5 Toronto Maple Leafs travel to Carolina vs the 18-16-9 Hurricanes 11 days after The Maple Leafs put up five against the Hurricanes. In the first meeting back in October, Carolina won 3-2, splitting the series in Toronto.

As Carolina stays red-hot, its captain, Eric Staal has been cleared for contact. Staal will be able to return from a lower-body injury, which caused him to miss a game for the first time this season. The Hurricanes are also without No. 1 goalie Cam Ward, who was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, according to ESPN.com.

"We're just trying to keep this thing going right now," David Skinner, who has six goals and four assists during a five-game point streak, told ESPN.com. "We're being consistent in our game and playing solid for all 60 minutes."

Over the last two games, which were both losses for Toronto, the Leafs allowed 12 goals to both New York franchises.

"I thought we played passive. We were afraid to make a mistake versus being aggressive and going after it," coach Randy Carlyle said after Tuesday's defeat. "We're not skating and being the tenacious Toronto Maple Leafs that I expect or everybody expects. We don't have enough tenacity in our game right now."

Injury report, according to NHL.com:

"Toronto defenseman Carl Gunnarsson (upper body) and forward David Clarkson (foot) were out of the lineup Tuesday and are day-to-day. Forwards Dave Bolland (ankle) and Trevor Smith (hand) are on injured reserve. ... Carolina forward Eric Staal (lower body) missed the past game and will likely miss a couple more. Ward (lower body) and forwards Riley Nash (lower body) and Jiri Tlusty (appendectomy) are on injured reserve."
