Microsoft Surface Pro review, news: The Windows RT tablet is being offered at a discount by retail giant Best Buy, as the tablet is expected to be phased out by Microsoft. Big Blue is offering the Windows Pro tablet’s 128GB variant for $679.99, which is $220.00 cheaper than what Best Buy usually charges.

In an earlier report, where Best Buy was offering the unit at a $400 discount, PCWorld says that the discount doesn’t seem to have any catch and that the tablets can be purchased either online or in-store. Best Buy is also selling the the original Windows-RT powered Surface entry-level 32GB variant for $280; $70 off its $350 price tag.

According to the tech news site, the Redmond tech giant appears to be clearing out old inventory in the New Year, encouraging buyers to jump up on the new Haswell-powered Surface Pro 2 iteration. Based on PCWorld’s reviews, CNET’s and other major tech publications, the new Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is a step up from its predecessor.

The idea that Microsoft is clearing out inventory is further confirmed by Microsoft’s move to sell the 128GB Surface Pro for $599 as part of a special “holiday deal” with limited quantities available. Prospective Surface Pro buyers are also enticed with a $50 credit at NFLShop.com if they’ve purchased a Surface Pro in the last few days. Microsoft isn’t featuring the Surface Pro on its product pages. The available configurations presented are the Surface, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2.

Aside from the Surface Pro 2 offers, Microsoft is also discounting Windows-powered tablets that use the lesser powerful Intel “Bay Trail” Atom processor. Extreme Tech reports that the 32GB Dell Venue Pro has dropped from $299 to $229 and the 32GB Lenovo Miix 2 and 32GB Toshiba Encore have fallen from to $249, from $299. Based on their current pricing, it puts these Windows tablets at par with its Android counterpart.

Best Buy is not promoting its Surface Pro discount as a limited-time special, but PC World says that there’s no reason to think that the Surface Pro will be around in a few months. This is specially true because of the aggressive offers from both Best Buy and Microsoft.
