New York Knicks Metta World Peace Reacts On Marcus Smart’s Situation; ‘Artest’ Relates Shoving Incident To His Malice In The Palace

Marcus Smart of the Oklahoma State basketball team has been receiving a lot of attention lately. Not because of his NBA draft stock but because of something totally negative. Smart is in hot water for shoving a fan from the stand after he fell from a play during their game against Texas Tech. The root of the incident was a racial slur thrown at him by a regular fan. He was ridiculed for that 'stupid' move saying he has no place in sport. Some also reacted that he has no right in hurting a fan that pays ticket.

This incident is somewhat similar to the Malice in the Palace in 2004. Indiana Pacers' Ron Artest, now called Metta World Peace, was among the lead characters in that ugly scene. Artest was suspended for 73 games for getting into a fist fight with a fan. The current New York Knicks player was able to come back, though, and hopped from team to team.

Metta World Peace was able to recover. On the other hand, for Smart, who is not yet in the NBA, his draft stock, according to rumors, was also affected by the incident. Although he already apologized saying "I take full responsibility" it would not hurt if gets advice from NBA stars.

Well, whether he asks it or not, he can get one. He can get some advice from the man who went through the same situation as him, Metta World Peace.

Here's an excerpt of his interview with NewsOK.com:

Q: Just because they give their money, does that give a fan the right to scream something?

If a fan screams something at me, I don't know what that person has been through, you know. He could have or she could have grown up rough or maybe in a single family household. I don't know what would make somebody scream negative things at somebody, maybe they're just having fun. In a pro game, I've learned to accept it because they pay to watch us play and hey, I appreciate it.

Q: If you could talk to Marcus, what advice would you give?

I don't know how old he is, but I know at 19 years old when I came out of St. Johns, I was fresh out the hood, fresh out of Queensbridge. So my mentality was still struggle, defensive and things like that. So I wasn't really conscious. But I'm 34 years old now. He's a young kid. I wish I would have listened when I was a kid, to my elders or to people who had my best interest at heart. And then I wish I would have been more conscious at my age. Those are two things that if you were to reach out to a kid like Marcus, a talented kid, a future leader in the community, you would tell him those things.
