‘Batman Vs Superman’ Plot Spoilers: Director Zack Snyder Reveals Influence Of 'The Dark Knight Returns'

'Batman Vs Superman' cast rumors have simmered down a bit after the recent Lex Luthor announcement. However, speculation on the plot continues, and director Zach Snyder provides some clues.

Director Zack Snyder is currently busy with promoting "300:Rise of an Empire" and he had an interview with Popcorn Magazine, a French publication. The conversation diverted to "B vs S" questions.

Comic Book Therapy provides the translation from the French Popcorn Magazine. On the question of whether the film is an adaptation of Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" (also made into a 2 part animated film), Snyder says: "(No) But the comic book will influence the history of Batman Vs. Superman, on which the writer David S. Goyer and myself will work"

Screenrant gives a brief background of the source material: "'Dark Knight Returns'revolves around a 55-year old Bruce Wayne, who has hung up his cape and cowl and retired after years of battling crime as the masked vigilante Batman. However, rising levels of violence and unlawful conduct in Gotham City inspire Bruce to resurrect his Caped Crusader alter-ego and return to action - something that not only prompts his most dangerous foes to get back in the game, but in time puts the Dark Knight at odds with the U.S. government and its "ally" (or "lackey," as seen through Bruce's eyes), Superman."

There are some elements that would not be possible in the sequel. Superman was not exactly chummy with the government at the end of "Man of Steel." Batman is not really that old (Ben Affleck is 41) and the Wonder Woman angle (as well as other Justice League boys) is not in "The Dark Knight Returns."

Speaking of Ben Affleck, Snyder hints at the approach they want him to take: "Ben brings an interesting counterweight to the performance of Henry in the role of Superman...He has the experience necessary to paint the picture of an older and more advised man than Clark Kent, who bears the scars of a seasoned vigilante while retaining the charm that Bruce Wayne deploys when present in the world."

Will Batman play an angry, bitter retired superhero and warn Superman about how his deeds will not be appreciated and even used by other people with ulterior motives?
