‘Frozen' Movie Vs 'Despicable Me 2': Disney 'Snow Queen' Adaptation Takes BAFTA 2014 Award For Best Animated Movie! Will It Also Win At Oscars 2014 And Box Office?

The "Frozen" movie, Disney's take on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," has gained another milestone: The BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film. It will face off against "Despicable Me 2" in the Oscars next month as they chase the successful sequel in the All-time Animated Box-office list.

The BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Awards were held last Sunday, February 16. "Frozen" beat "Despicable Me 2" of Illumination Entertainment and "Monsters University" from Pixar.

The film's directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee accepted the award and thanked their massive crew. The Guardian recounted their speech: "..it took about 600 people on this one - we had thousands of storyboard designs they had to draw and redraw."

They also proceeded to thank the voice cast which included Kristen Bell and they acknowledged the songwriters of the musical numbers.

The next animated face-off will be at the Oscars on March 2. "Monsters University" missed this one, though. The two frontrunners will be joined by "The Croods," "Ernest and Celestine" and "The Wind Rises" the last feature film from Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki. "Frozen" is the odds-on favorite here, followed by "The Wind Rises" according to Gold Derby.

There is also a side competition between them in the Best Song category. Pharell's "Happy" will face off against "Let It Go" sung by Idina Menzel in the film.

Another important showdown between the two is in the All-Time Highest Grossing Animated Film list. "Frozen"at  $957,948,347 (currently ranked no. 4) is hot on the heels of third ranked "Despicable Me 2" with  $970,761,885 (from Wikipedia, figures as of February 14, 2014).  However, "Despicable Me 2" has ended its theatrical run while "Frozen" is still going strong. The story of Elsa and Anna is on the way to becoming the highest grossing non-Pixar Disney film ever, with only "The Lion King" standing in its way. "Toy Story 3" is the supreme animated feature, the only one to exceed $ 1 billion.
