Lego Movie is having a great box office performance since being released on February 7 this month. This is despite the small amount of media hype the film received prior to its release date. The animated movie continues to sizzle this weekend, edging every new movie that comes to the big screen. Among those that Lego beat are 3 Days To Kill by Kevin Costner, The Monuments Men by Matt Damon, and Pompeii by Kit Harrington.

Warner Bros Pictures, Lego Movie's main distributor, never really fared well in the animation department. The company must be very thankful that the brick-toy based film is having a break out year. Well, they are indeed thankful. In fact, they are showing their gratitude by confirming that the movie, which features the voices of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman, will have its sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros has already revealed the release date for the sequel of the $275,660,000 box office worth movie. The entertainment website wrote:

"On Friday, the studio announced that the untitled movie will hit theaters on May 26, 2017, the beginning of the long Memorial Day weekend. Warners is being vague in terms of saying whether the film will be a proper sequel, or a Lego Ninjago spinoff.

News of a second film comes as The Lego Movie continues to make history at the worldwide box office, where it has earned north of $200 million in under two weeks. On Wednesday, the 3D animated film crossed the $150 million mark domestically."

News of the Lego Movie sequel has been around ever since the first movie was aired, a sign of the producers' and writer's confidence on their project.

Lego Movie, 2014's current highest grossing movie, received generally favorable reviews. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 96% approval rating with an average rating of 8.2/10 based on 154 reviews. The Hollywood Reporter said Lego Movie is the example of how perfect feature animation is done.
