Oscars 2014 Best Picture Prediction: 'Her' Is A Long Shot, But Why Do Critics Say It Should Win?

The Academy Awards show is one week away, and predictions will abound. This year features a diverse and wide-open Best Picture race, and a 'smaller film' may as well take it all if some critics end up being spot-on.

Movie critics are a diverse lot, and the art is very subjective. However, predicting an Oscar win involves analysis of the Academy's composition and tendencies. To answer the question: 'Who will win the Oscar for Best Picture?' oddsmakers and analysts have two clear frontrunners: "12 Years A Slave" and "Gravity."

However, for the more personal and subjective question 'Who should win the Oscar for Best Picture?' the answers are divided. Considering how they considered it a 'long shot' at winning the Academy's biggest prize, the critics who chose 'Her' as their own Best Picture is a pleasant surprise.

From Moviefone, critic Alexis Moore voted for 'What Should Win': "'Her.' It was my favorite movie of 2013 and sadly it got lost in the shadow of "12 Years a Slave," "Gravity," and "American Hustle." While I enjoyed all of those films, I adored "Her" for its original take on what is very likely going to be our future. I mean, we all have a friend who is just a little too into their phone, right?"

Indie Wire had a collective vote: "Will win: '12 Years a Slave'
Could win: 'Gravity'
Should win: 'Her' (though '12 Years' or 'Gravity' would suit me just fine)."

Two sites from the UK reflect how the Brits related to the movie. From Heyuguys.uk: "'Her' is the complete package; a harmonious marriage of script, directing and performance - everything the Academy voters desire when selecting the rightful winner, and whilst they always lean towards real life human struggles (half the reason why 12 Years a Slave will run riot), to deny a film which provides all the ingredients for greatness of awards success is just plain wrong. Jonze's portrait of loneliness and love is something we can all relate to, regardless of the subtext and futuristic setting."

From Digital Spy, UK, answering the question of their personal vote for Best Picture: "'Her' - Emma Dibdin, Features Editor
Spike Jonze has created the most human, relatable love story of the year between a man and his operating system. The artificially intelligent Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) and Joaquin Phoenix's lonely Theo strike up a connection that feels authentic and intimate, in contrast to Theo's stilted exchanges with ex-wife Rooney Mara and one-shot blind date Olivia Wilde, The shifting power dynamic as Samantha begins to move beyond her programming is painfully well observed, and their chemistry is all the more impressive given that Phoenix and Johansson recorded their scenes months apart. Jonze's vision of a technologically advanced future, like all the best sci-fi, is one that tells us more about the world we actually live in."

The Academy is not known for being unpredictable and chances are very slim that a movie like "Her" would beat a film with strong global themes like "12 Years A Slave." However, Spike Jonze's masterpiece clearly spoke to many hearts around the globe and that may be enough of an achievement for him.
