Calgary went 6-3-1 in its last 10 games while the Kings went 3-7 and were struggling to score. They were struggling until at least last night, when they scored six for a 6-4 victory over the Avalanche.
"It was great, down by two," Kings defenseman Matt Greene told NHL.com. "I don't think we can say we've done that a lot of times, especially coming out of the break there and being in a shootout like we were tonight. Obviously, we got to buckle down defensively, especially on the PK. For us to come out and put up six, it's huge for our team. When you're down by two, that's awesome."
Goaltender Martin Jones stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third. Jones had lost four straight decisions after winning eight in a row to begin his NHL career.
"We could've packed it in easily and blamed it on the Olympic break, 'OK, it's the first game back,'" Kopitar told LA Kings Insider. "Chalk it up with a couple of excuses, but we didn't get down. We believed and we were playing hard for each other, and at the end of the day, the results were good for us."
Goaltender Joni Ortio and center Markus Granlund are slated to make their NHL debuts after starring for Abbotsford of the AHL. Ortio went 20-6-0 with a 2.22 GAA in 28 contests, while Granlund led the Heat with 23 goals and 44 points in 50 games, according to ESPN.com.
"It's exciting. I'm happy that we get to make our debut at the same time," the 22-year-old Ortio told the team's official website. "It's a fun coincidence and it's going to be fun."
