Oscar Pistorius Case Update: ‘Blade Runner’ Trial For Reeva Steenkamp Murder Begins Monday; Criminal Trial Will Be Allowed For TV Broadcast, A First In South Africa

Oscar Pistorius case update: South African Olympian and Paralympian Oscar Pistorius will effectively go on trial this Monday, March 3, for the alleged murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who died of gunshot wounds Valentine’s Day of 2013.

The supermodel was found dead inside the bathroom of Oscar Pistorius’s home. The 27-year-old athlete has denied the shooting, claiming it was an accident and she thought that Steenkamp was an burglar.

Cameras will be allowed inside the courtroom, making the criminal trial available for broadcast. It would be the first time in South Africa’s history that a criminal trial will be broadcasted and possibly even live on TV. Earlier, a South African broadcast network established a TV channel dedicated to the Oscar Pistorius case and trial.

According to the International Business Times, the decision to allow cameras was to provide a balance between Pistorius’s right to fair trial and the freedoms of the media. Judge Dunstan Mlambo’s ruling also stipulated that any witnesses, including the world-renowned athlete, would have to give their consent to be filmed.

"The justice system is still perceived as treating the rich and famous with kid gloves whilst being harsh on the poor and vulnerable," Mlambo said, the Business Times noted.

"Enabling a larger South African society to follow first-hand the criminal proceedings which involve a celebrity, so to speak, will go a long way into dispelling these negative and unfounded perceptions about the justice system, and will inform and educate society regarding the conduct of criminal proceedings."

The trial has received worldwide attention as Oscar Pistorius has gained fame for being the first double-amputee athlete to be part of the able-bodied Olympics. He competed at the summer games in 2012, participating in the 400 meters and 4 x 400 meters relay. The six-time Paralympic Games medalist and South African sports icon placed eight in both events.

Oscar Pistorius murder trial is expected to be the most talked about event in South Africa this year.
