Rust Cohle and Martin Hart have been haunted by a conspiracy for more than fifteen years. Such conspiracy involves a yellow king, a scarred man, and a mysterious destination. Something terrifying has affected Louisiana and worse, it remains untouchable.

True Detective season finale recap involves a newly revealed villain: Errol Childress, His household has been portrayed in the opener which included stacks of VHS tapes, a disobedient dog, an unhinged spouse, and a corpse.

Meanwhile, Marty and Rust fails to interrogate Steve Geraci who they initially suspected to be connected to the murders. The duo then returns to investigation and Marty comes across with a picture of Marie Fontenot's house.

He then realizes that the original suspect's description of bright green ears might actually be connected to the photograph's bright green paint. Several twists and turns lead the two to the home of Errol's father which likewise contains its own horror stories.

Marty and Rust also find time to settle things from the past which involve their dramas with Maggie. When they finally arrive at Errol's den, the two are left with no choice but to break in. Marty finds an array of creepy things including dolls and doorway beads. Rust, on the other hand, checks the den's surrounding which was likewise filled with bizarre things.

Errol suddenly comes out from the darkness and stabs Rust. As Errol tries to deliver is final fatal stab, Rust defeats him and cops appear just in time. Both Mart and Rust recover in the hospital. Rust says that he felt his daughter when he was on the verge of dying. He also believes that the "light" is finally winning.

As True Detective fans suspected, the mysterious destination Carcosa is Errol's deranged abode whereas the Yellow King is none other than Errol. However, it wasn't revealed how Errol managed to persuade people to be involved in his deeds.

What is Errol's reason for his clearly maniacal acts? How did Marty and Rust survive the attack? Who's the corpse in Errol's shed? These are the mysteries which True Detective still need to shed light on.
